The UK government is to introduce a plastic packaging tax, which could help tackle the issue of plastic waste.
Food and drink companies are now to be taxed on plastic that does not include at least 30% recycled content in a bid to reduce the amount of single-use plastics being produced.
The government states that nearly 2.5 million tonnes of plastic are used in the UK every year, out of which the majority is made from new plastic rather than recycled materials.
Food and drink brands are likely to reconsider their packaging and move to more sustainable alternatives in order to avoid the tax, which is set to come into force in April 2022.
Furthermore, the government has proposed a new waste-reduction strategy, through which retailers and producers of packaging will be forced to pay the full cost of collection and recycling. The new scheme will also consider banning plastic packaging where there are alternatives available. A great start for a more sustainable future!
