Mushroom, Seaweed & Co: Discover Great Sustainable Packaging Solutions
Packaging design really does have the ability to change the future. Bye-bye plastic, hello mushroom!

Brands are becoming increasingly aware of the huge responsibility to keep their environmental footprint as low as possible. On the strength of this, these brands have to keep thinking ahead when it comes to their packaging design and production. Luckily though, it has never been easier to switch to sustainable packaging alternatives. Here at CuCo Creative, we have a talented team of packaging design experts who have helped brands such as Wild England and Scrummi find the perfect sustainable option for their business. There are so many great solutions on the market, so let’s look at three great sustainable packaging solutions we absolutely love:
Starch

Starch-based packaging has become very popular over the last few years. It holds the consistency of plastic and can be used for a wide range of purposes to truly help reduce your environmental impact. One producer of starch-based packaging is Paperfoam. Paperfoam produces world-renowned, sustainable packaging solutions made from starch, fibres and water. Their 100% biodegradable and compostable packaging can be shaped into literally any form you need using injection moulding, making PaperFoam a hugely flexible packaging option. No surprise, their starch packaging is already being used by major brands such as Schwarzkopf, Pukka, T-Mobile and Veuve Cliquot!
Seaweed

A great alternative to plastic foil is seaweed! The substance agar, which is found in seaweed and is often used as a plant-based alternative to gelatin, has now found its way into the packaging world. It can be turned into a variety of different packaging options without the need for chemicals and biodegrade in weeks completely naturally.
Being a plentiful, sustainable raw material, seaweed really has the potential to take over the sustainable packaging world in the coming years. Plus: The packaging is edible and contains a huge amount of nutrients, such as vitamin A, C and E. What’s not to like?
Mushroom Packaging

A magic mushroom of a different kind: Consisting of only two ingredients, hemp and fungi, this multi-functional, low-cost, insulating and water-resistant packaging is 100% biobased and composts in 45 days when added to the soil.
But these are only a few reasons why mushroom packaging is definitely one of our favourites: The fungi packaging is also a gold-certified Cradle-to-Cradle product, meaning it is produced from waste materials (fungus sprouts from agriculture) which are turned into valuable raw material for the packaging!
This is why, for our eco-conscious client Wild, a high-end producer of sustainable hotel commodities, CuCo recommended mushroom packaging for holding their refillable shampoo and body wash. The packaging is currently being prototyped in various hotels within the Dorset area, and the client is thrilled with its new innovative and highly sustainable packaging solution.
